About
Jamon Van Den Hoek is Director of Conflict Ecology and Professor of Geography and Geospatial Science at Oregon State University. He uses satellite imagery and geospatial analysis to document the initial and enduring consequences of armed conflict, including damage to lives, livelihoods, and landscapes. His research has informed reporting from the New York Times, BBC, and Al Jazeera, among others, and he has contributed to flagship reports from the IPCC and UNHCR on climate risks in conflict-induced displacement settings.
In 2023, he co-founded the Decentralized Damage Mapping Group, an international group of researchers and practitioners who use satellite imagery to assess environmental impacts of war in settings such as Gaza, Ukraine, and Iran; these data are widely used by journalists, humanitarian responders, and legal investigators. In 2025, DDMG received the European Space Agency Earth Observation Excellence Team Award. Jamon was a NASA Postdoctoral Fellow at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and holds a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
