Ziad Al Achkar, Ph.D., is a Senior Specialist on the Digital Programming team at Catholic Relief Services, where he leads the learning strategy, knowledge management, and efforts to translate evidence from digital programming into organizational practice. His work spans responsible technology, artificial intelligence, geospatial analytics, and the application of digital tools across humanitarian and development programs.
Ziad's experience lies at the intersection of technology, humanitarian action and development, and conflict analysis. He has held previous research, teaching, and leadership roles with Yale University's Humanitarian Research Lab, George Mason University, and the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative. His work has included leading conflict-analysis teams, supporting remote-sensing and satellite-imagery initiatives, developing evidence and knowledge platforms, and advising organizations on the responsible use of data and technology in complex and crisis-affected environments.
Ziad's publications include peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, policy briefs, practitioner guidebooks, and technical guidance on responsible data use, digital risk, remote sensing in conflict settings, and the digital transformation of humanitarian action. He holds a Ph.D. in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution at George Mason University.
