About
Michael (Mike) Budde is a geographer at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he serves as project manager for the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET), an initiative that uses Earth observation, geospatial information, and other data to monitor food security and identify emerging risks of famine and food insecurity around the world. Mike also serves as the USGS liaison to the International Charter "Space and Major Disasters," an international collaboration that mobilizes satellite data and imagery to support disaster response. As a member of the Charter's Executive Secretariat, he contributes to coordinating this global effort and facilitating the delivery of critical Earth observation resources to disaster-affected areas.
In addition, Mike is an Authorized User (AU) for the United States, enabling him to activate the Charter on behalf of emergency managers in the United States and facilitate activations for countries without their own Authorized User, helping expand access to satellite-based information during emergencies. Through his work with USGS, FEWS NET, and the International Charter, Mike supports the application of Earth observation and geospatial technologies to some of the world's most pressing challenges, including food insecurity, disaster preparedness and response.
