Lea Shanley, PhD, is the Director and CEO at the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI), a nonprofit in the San Francisco Bay area that pioneers research in computer science and AI for global impact. Throughout her career, Shanley's research and leadership roles have focused on bringing spatial technologies, computer-supported cooperative work, citizen science, and open science to bear on scientific and societal challenges, as well as on tackling issues in technology policy and governance. Previously, she served as a White House Presidential Innovation Fellow in the Office of the Chief Technologist at NASA Headquarters; co-Executive Director of the National Science Foundation's South Big Data Innovation Hub; Director of the Wilson Center's Commons Lab; and AAAS Congressional Science Fellow in the U.S. Senate.
Dr. Shanley is a member of the Group on Earth Observations Data and Knowledge Working Group and AI4EO Working Group. Previously she served as a member of the IEEE Indigenous Data Sovereignty Working Group, on the advisory committee for the NASA Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC), the Scientific Council for NASA's Consortium for the Valuation of Applications Benefits Linked to Earth Science, and the Board of Trustees for US/ICOMOS (International Committee of Monuments and Sites). She co-founded the US Federal Community of Practice on Crowdsourcing and Citizen Science, which resulted in Citizenscience.gov, a White House Memorandum, a federal statute, and team recognition as a finalist for the 2017 Ash Award by Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. She holds a Ph.D. focusing on GIS and satellite remote sensing from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
