About
Kate Chapman is a technologist, geographer, and farmer who distills complex systems and data into concrete, manageable actions. Her work has spanned disaster response, global supply chains, online communities, and dairy herds. She is Chief Technology Officer at Feanix, a biotech startup that combines whole-genome sequencing, machine learning, and on-farm data to give dairy farmers animal-level breeding and herd management recommendations. She is also a founding board member of Common Space, which is building the world's first independent, community-governed humanitarian satellite constellation.
Kate's work in geospatial began in college and has taken her across sectors ranging from video games to humanitarian response. After the 2010 Haiti earthquake, she was part of the OpenStreetMap community's grassroots response, and she went on to co-found the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team and serve as its first Executive Director. She has also chaired the OpenStreetMap Foundation, led engineering enablement and architecture at the Wikimedia Foundation, and served as CTO of the Cadasta Foundation and Open Supply Hub. When she isn't thinking about virtual systems, she's thinking about physical ones on her dairy goat farm.
